A review in SMS – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

IT TOOK all of 7 minutes before the line, “In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit.”  Just right after the Tale of Erebor, told in a manner that brought to mind The Ten Commandments.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, is the delightful tale of Bilbo Baggins, commissioned by Gandalf to join 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield(?) to claim back The Lonely Mountain, their home.

What ensues is an adventure brimming with much detail only a Tolkien geek would love.  But I am not and I love it just the same.  It’s a lot of flashbacks and backstories, too much information that never looked, sounded, and entertained so good.

All the usual characters are there – Galadriel halfway through, and Gollum and “the” ring by the second hour.  But the revelations are Bilbo, and Thorin.  Especially Thorin, who is charismatic as The Dwarf King.  He is firm, he pierces with his stare…  and he sings!  This unexpected journey is an unexpected musical as well.

True courage is not knowing when to take a life.  But when to spare one.

After the movie, we met up with Chin Eik and Giuseppe and strolled along Orchard Road.

All the walking brought us back to Gelatissimo in front of Shaw Lido, where we saw the movie. Giuseppe treated us to gelato to our hearts’ content!

I didn’t immediately get why Michele wanted to have the shot taken again. Haha!

Back at their serviced apartment, I saw the piano at the lobby and instantly felt the need to sing “The Christmas Song”. Haha! This is our version of the singer and the songwriter.
